Creating a Resort-Inspired Backyard

What hospitality designers do differently — and which of it translates to a private home.

Resorts plan for repetition and durability. That discipline translates well to a private terrace: fewer shapes, better materials, everything specified for continuous use.

Shade, water and fire are the three anchors. A cantilever umbrella over lounge seating, a low fire table between chairs, and clear space at the pool edge do most of the work.

Commercial-grade seating is often the better residential buy. It is built for daily use by strangers, which is a harder brief than a family terrace.

Keep the palette to two or three materials so the space reads calm rather than collected.
